Shopping

Lower Richmond Road has its own parade of shops running towards Putney Lower Common, with independent cafés and everyday essentials within a short walk. For a fuller range, Putney High Street is close by, where the Putney Exchange shopping centre brings the larger supermarkets and high-street names together under one roof, backed by a spread of independents along the surrounding streets. The riverside setting means the weekly shop, a morning coffee and a walk along the Embankment can all be folded into one outing, and the shops of Barnes are a short distance in the other direction.

Eateries

The pubs here are a destination in their own right. The Spencer looks out over Putney Lower Common, while the Dukes Head sits on the river near the Embankment, both long-standing Putney names. Along Lower Richmond Road there is a steady run of cafés and neighbourhood restaurants, and the bars and dining rooms of Putney High Street and the riverside add plenty more within a few minutes' walk. For weekend brunch or a coffee after a walk by the water, there is no shortage of choice.

Culture

This stretch of Putney is defined by the river. The Embankment is home to a cluster of rowing clubs and marks the start of the University Boat Race each spring, when the crowds gather along the towpath. The Half Moon on Lower Richmond Road is one of London's oldest live music pubs, having hosted everyone from the Rolling Stones to Kate Bush over the years, and still puts on music through the week. Putney Lower Common and the towpath towards Barnes and the London Wetland Centre give easy access to open space and birdlife on the doorstep.

Transport

Lower Richmond Road is well placed for getting into town. Putney station, a short walk away, runs fast South Western Railway services to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo in around fifteen minutes. East Putney, on the District line, adds an Underground route through Earl's Court to South Kensington, Victoria and the West End, and Putney Bridge station sits just across the river. The number 22 bus starts at Putney Lower Common and runs through Chelsea to the West End, with further routes along the Lower and Upper Richmond Roads for local journeys.
